You must certainly go listen to Kantades and Arekies in some traditional taverna!
The Zakynthian Kantada is an old, traditional, polyphonic piece of music for a choir and is sung to the accompaniment of guitar and mandolin. It is a love song, full of desire for the weaker sex. Some are written by lyricists and others are impromptu.
Arekies are songs with a particular style, sung by a quartet without being accompanied by instruments.
So on a moonlit night, you will surrender to the eternal lyricism of Zakynthos, drinking local wine and trying Zakynthian dishes, one of the greatest pleasures in any visit to the island. You will enjoy your meal in magical surroundings, with your table at the water’s edge, or in the quiet flower-filled garden of a restaurant beneath a starry sky on a summer’s night, delighting in the extremely interesting gastronomic specialities you are offered.
It is wel worth trying dishes such as: ruster ragou with thick pasta, country chicken ragou, coq au vin, rabbit stifado, stuffed braised chicken, rabbit with ladotiri cheese, stuffed veal spleen, veal ragout, pappardelle with minced meat, lobster with pasta, octopus in wine, rabbit stuffed with local cheese on the spit, aubergines skordostoumbi (with garlic), etc.
